1931 Born in Bäretswil
1937–47 Primary and secondary school in Zurich
1945 Discovers photography
1947–50 Student in the Graphic Arts Department of the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts, Course inspired by the Bauhaus. Takes photography lessons
1948–50 Turns to painting and works in the studios of Monticelli and Otto Bachmann
March 1951 Arrives in Paris. Studies for several months in the Architecture Department of the School of Fine Arts, Paris, where he meets César and Pierre Dmitrienko, who will remain his friends. Student at the Académie Julian
1952–59 Freelance painter and graphic designer in Paris, Brussels and New York
1953 Graphic designer in the studio of Paul Marquet. Redesigns the logos of NRF and Gallimard
1953–55 Recruited by Hélène Lazareff, who is responsible for the visual identity of Nouveau Femina Works with literary director Roger Nimier, photographer Fouli Elia and graphic designer Antoine Kieffer
1955 First photographic works
1955–59 Recruited by the director Jean Adnet and becomes art director at Galeries Lafayette. Oversees the design of posters and advertisements Works with graphic designer Jean Widmer, designer Slavik and William Klein, on photography
1959 Travels to New York as assistant to Jean Tinguely. The works of Robert Rauschenberg and Barnett Newman encourage him to produce large-format paintings. Develops a personal oeuvre that draws on the lyrical abstraction movement
1959–66 Works as a photographer for Elle before accepting the post of art director offered to him by Hélène Lazareff
Takes charge of graphic identity and modernises the magazine. Inspired by Alexey Brodovitch and Henry Wolf, he pursues the democratisation of fashion and its new visual language. Hires leading photographers (Robert Frank, Sarah Moon, Frank Horvat, Jeanloup Sieff, etc.) and illustrators (Jean-Michel Folon, Roland Topor, Roman Cieslewicz and others)
1960 First fashion photographs
1964 Uses a Paillard-Bolex 16mm camera to capture movement. Assists Peter Foldes and Chris Marker
1965 Embarks on a 25-year collaboration as a fashion photographer with André Courrèges and Emanuel Ungaro, with whom he will remain very close
1965–68 Directs 42 Dim, Dam, Dom films for French television, Paris, produced by Daisy de Galard
1966 Leaves Elle when Hélène Lazareff departs and becomes a freelance photographer for Vogue, Stern and The Sunday Times
1966 Gives up painting to devote himself entirely to photography
Diversifies his activities, working as a set designer for the theatre on plays by Max Frisch and Eugène Ionesco
1966 First medal from the Art Directors Club International; sixteen more will follow
1967 Joins Oliviero Toscani to establish Vogue in Italy
1967–92 Art director of André Sauret publications. The “Livres de la Santé” collection cements his collaboration with Raymond Lévy for the publishers Rencontre in Lausanne.
1969 First international Nikon award
1970 Osaka: artist’s book devoted to the Expo ’70 world’s fair with Bruno Suter for the publisher Hermann
1970 Art director of Zeit Magazin in Hamburg
1974–77 Returns to the magazine Elle to take up the position of art director. Works with the photographers Hans Feurer, Lothar Schmid and others
1975 His personal work on the themes of the infinite, the sky and space brings him into the Sky Art movement.
1976–78 Major collaboration with Thierry Mugler and Claude Montana on series of photographs featuring Surrealist scenarios
1981 His interest in contemporary art leads him to create the layout for a collection of works entitled “Contemporains” published by the Centre Georges Pompidou.

1983–96 Professor of image design and photography at ESAG (École supérieure d’Art Graphique, the former Académie Julian) at the invitation of his friend Roman Cieslewicz

1991 Best Art Book award for Giacometti, illustrated with his own photographs
2001 Produces seven portraits of graphic designers for the congress of the Alliance Graphique Internationale at the French National Library
2003 Makes Ces appareils qui nous ont vus, a series of three films on the history of photography, for TV 5
2005 Makes drawn films for Lot et ses filles (text by Michel Balmont)
2006 Makes a documentary entitled Van Gogh, derniers jours à Auvers-sur-Oise Peter Knapp is a member of Rencontres de Lurs and AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale) and lecturer at Sciences-Po.
2021 Curates the exhibition The Giacometti: A Family of Creators, Fondation Maeght, Saint-Paul de Vence
